with videoMauno Loa, the largest active volcano in the world, has erupted for the first time in nearly 40 years. That happened Sunday night (local time) on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Lava flows were then reported in the crater of the volcano on Monday morning, without posing a threat to the immediate environment. “We can see the lava flows from Kona,” US Geological Survey spokesman Miel Corbett told international news agencies. “But for now there is no indication that the lava flows will spread further.”

How long the volcanic eruption will last and whether it will cause lava to flow into populated parts of the island is impossible to predict, according to Corbett. The scientists were on high alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the volcano’s summit, which last erupted in 1984.
The Geological Survey and the emergency services in Hawaii are in constant contact with each other about the development of the eruption. The population of the island has also been advised to prepare for a possible evacuation. Residents have been warned of falling debris and volcanic ash.

Volcanoes
Mauno Lona rises 4169 meters above sea level and together with four other volcanoes forms the Big Island of Hawaii, the southernmost island of the Hawaiian archipelago. The 1,247-foot Kilauea volcano on the island erupted in 2018. Seven hundred homes were then destroyed.
Some slopes of Mauna Lona are steeper than those of Kilauea. If the lava starts to flow, it will therefore come down much faster than in 2018. For example, after an eruption of Mauno Lona in 1950, the lava flowed to the sea in three hours, over a distance of 24 kilometers.
