You will remember that since its revelation, FromSoftware mentioned that George R.R. Martinauthor of Game of Thrones, I would be working on Elden Ring. As time went on, we learned that Martin it helped build the lore of the game and sure enough, that seems to be the only thing it did. As part of a recent interview, Hidetaka Miyazakidirector of Elden Ringrevealed the type of restrictions it placed on the author.
Talking with New Yorker, Miyazaki explained that there were a couple of rules that Martin should have followed when working on Elden Ring:
“In our games, the story should always serve the player experience. If Martin had written the story of the game, I was going to worry that we would have had to walk away from this. I wanted him to have the freedom to write freely and not feel constrained by some obscure mechanic that he probably would have had to change during his development.”
According Miyazaki, Martin provided several texts on the history of the world of Elden Ring, as well as its characters and its mythology. In that sense, Miyazaki I didn’t want to involve Martin in the history of the game because they did not want to lose the classic essence of FromSoftwareso instead, they chose to give it freedom with other parts of the experience.
Publisher’s note: Having played Elden Ring, I can confirm that Martin’s contributions are fairly minimalistic and the narrative still feels like something you’d expect from FromSoftware. I can’t say I’m disappointed in the least, as I think they did a great job with the game anyway.
