This Tuesday it was confirmed that Nancy Pelosi, the president of the United States House of Representatives, landed in Taiwan, an action that China has disqualified due to its complex relationship with the island and that has revived tensions between the armies of the Chinese Xi Jinping and American Joe Biden.
The 82-year-old politician, who has been a congresswoman since 1987, is the first speaker of the House to visit the Asian island, which debates its sovereignty with China, in more than 25 years. The last to do so was Republican Newt Gingrich in 1997.
This is not the first time that Pelosi has challenged China. In fact, part of his political career has focused on the tense relations between that country and the United States. In 1991, for example, he commemorated the victims of the pro-democracy demonstrations in China in 1989.
Most recently, in 2019, he expressed his support for the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.
