The WHO calculates that vaccinations have saved six lives every minute in every year of the last half century.
Worldwide According to the World Health Organization, vaccinations have saved at least 154 million lives over the past 50 years. This is reported by the news agency AFP.
Small children have benefited the most from vaccinations. The WHO also calculates that vaccinations have practically saved six lives every minute in every year of half a century.
“Vaccines are among the most effective inventions in history. With their help, it has been possible to prevent diseases that were feared before,” says the director of the WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a statement released on Wednesday.
WHO bases its knowledge on a study recently published by the prestigious medical journal The Lancet.
In the study, the WHO examined the effects of 14 vaccines used in its Expanded Program on Immunization.
According to research, over the past half century, vaccines against 14 diseases had reduced child deaths by 40 percent. In Africa, vaccinations had similarly succeeded in reducing child deaths by more than 50 percent.
“Thanks to vaccines, smallpox has been eradicated and polio is disappearing. With the development of vaccines, we are also getting a head start on diseases like malaria and cervical cancer,” said.
“With continued research, investment and collaboration, we can save millions of lives today and over the next 50 years.”
The health organization's vaccination program turns 50 in May.
