A statement issued by the President’s Office in Malawi said that a plane carrying Saulos Chilima, Vice President of Malawi, and nine others, had disappeared, according to the BBC.
The statement added that the plane, belonging to the Malawi Defense Force, “went off the radar” after leaving the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning.
The president ordered a search and rescue operation after aviation officials were unable to contact the plane.
The plane was supposed to land at Mzuzu International Airport, in the north of the country.
After being informed of the incident, Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera canceled his scheduled trip to the Bahamas.
