After the renovation of PlayStation Plus with its three new tiers – Essential, Extra and Premium – Sony recently announced a new loyalty program called PlayStation Stars. This program involves completing several campaigns, such as earning specific trophies or playing a game each month, to earn loyalty points. It is currently in testing and will be available for free later this year.
In addition to redeeming loyalty points for PSN funds and specific items on the PlayStation StoreSony also disclosed the presence of “digital collectibles“that can be earned. They have been described as”digital representations of things PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as beloved devices that draw on Sony’s history of innovation“.
Of course, it could easily be assumed that these are equivalent to non-fungible tokens or NFTs, which have generated a fair amount of controversy over the past few months. Speaking to the Washington Post, Grace Chen, Vice President, Network Advertising, Loyalty & Licensed Merchandise, said these “will by no means be NFTs.”
“I am definitely not NFT. Absolutely no. They cannot be exchanged or sold. They are not leveraging any blockchain technology and they are definitely not NFTs“Anyway, PlayStation has promised more information over the next few months.
