On the eve of the Monaco Grand Prix both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez they had been clear about the difficulties it might encounter Red Bull on the Principality circuit, between track characteristics unfavorable to the RB20 and the simultaneous recovery of opposing teams such as McLaren and Ferrari. In a certain sense, the first two Free Practice sessions somehow confirmed the concerns of the two drivers, which already emerged last weekend in Imola.
While the three-time world champion admitted that he does not expect miracles from here on out, appearing particularly pessimistic about qualifying and the race, Perez also fears that this weekend could be complex for him and the team. 12th at the end of FP1, ‘Checo’ entered the top-10 in the following session, but did not go beyond eighth position, demonstrating a circuit that puts the single-seaters of the Anglo-Austrian manufacturer in difficulty.
“It will be tough this weekend, at the moment we are struggling to overcome our limits – he has declared – we’ll see what we can do tonight, we did a slightly different set-up on each car and I don’t know what the problems were for Max until we debrief. There are many things to evaluate, the pace on the long run seems to have improved, but we will have to wait and see how we behave tomorrow. Ferrari looks really strong and whenever he needs a ride, it seems really quick and easy. It’s an advantage for them and they have no problems with the tyres. We have some elements to improve during the night and we hope to be able to fight again and be closer to the leaders.”
