The Minister of Agriculture, Sara Rubira, met last week with the representatives of the agricultural unions of Yecla and Jumilla, and made a commitment to hold a meeting with all the agents of the Altiplano affected by the drought. For this reason, the Jumilla City Council hosted a meeting this Thursday between Rubira herself, the mayors of Yecla, Remedios Lajara, and that of Jumilla, Seve González, the general director of Water, José Sandoval, and the highest representatives in the Altiplano of the unions Coag, Upa and Asaja, as well as the platform against climate manipulation, which brings together all those affected by the use of anti-hail cannons.
At this meeting, the regional government informed farmers of the measures taken to address the damage suffered by rainfed crops, among which the implementation of the Rainfed Table stands out, the demand for a new specific ecoregime in the CAP, the increase in the subsidy for contracting agricultural insurance for vineyards, olive groves, nuts or cereals, or the preparation of a detailed report to know the impact in each area.
In that sense, the first mayor of Jumilla, Seve González, highlighted that “the Autonomous Community has enabled an aid fund for the drought quantified at 18 million euros, of which 5 will be allocated directly to the Altiplano,” that Rubira clarified that “it is urgent that the Government of Spain adopt measures to address the losses of farmers who have been unprofitable for years, and that is why on the 24th I will travel to Madrid to sit at the table with the national representatives of the agrarian organizations, and with Andalusia, to demand that the Minister hold an urgent meeting to address the serious problem of the rabid dry land in the Spanish Southeast and to provide solutions.
Regarding her agenda, the counselor has also announced that “on Monday I will hold a meeting with the president of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation to inform him of those matters that concern farmers and that are within his competence, such as relief irrigation or social risks. For her part, the mayor of Yecla, Remedios Lajara, recalled that a week ago the mayors of Jumilla, Abanilla, Fortuna and Yecla, traveled to Madrid to show their concern at the Ministry “in the face of a situation that is unsustainable.”
Javier Martínez, president of Asaja Jumilla, recalled on behalf of his colleagues that “the plants are dying, and it is not only a problem for this harvest, but also for future harvests, since the trees are greatly reduced.”
