The KNMI has declared code red for July 5 for the provinces of North Holland, Flevoland, Friesland and the IJsselmeer area.
What is Code Red?
Code red can be issued in extreme weather that can have a major impact on society. “The weather situation can cause so much damage, injury and nuisance that it can be socially disruptive. This can be very local. Code red is issued at the earliest 12 hours before the weather phenomenon occurs. Code red can also be issued if there is a small chance of an extreme weather situation, but the safety risks are high.
How often does code red occur?
Code red is rare, on average only once or twice a year. The last time code red was declared for wind gusts was in February 2022.
Which color codes does the KNMI use?
The KNMI has been working for years with various color codes, which stand for international warning colours. Code yellow, orange and red can be issued for all weather types – precipitation, temperature, wind, thunderstorms. Code red means: take action, it says on the website of the KNMI.
Code orange
Code orange means extreme weather that can lead to damage, injury and nuisance. The advice is then: be prepared. Code orange is indicated 24 hours in advance if the chance of extreme weather is more than 60 percent. This occurs about five to ten times a year in the Netherlands. In the case of code yellow, there may be dangerous weather and motorists should be extra alert when they hit the road.
