The weather in Italy will see the peninsula split in two: still bad weather in the Alpine regions and Piedmont while sunny in the center and on the major islands
After days marked by bad weather and adverse weather conditions, it finally seems that Italy is about to enjoy a moment of respite. The disturbance responsible for the recent rains and thunderstorms is gradually losing effectiveness, moving westwards and leaving room for an improvement in atmospheric conditions in Northern Italy.
However, this is not the time to let your guard down: the meeting between a African vortex arriving and the one still present between Spain and Central Europe could create an unstable weather situation early next week, with significant rainfall in the Mediterranean region.

The forecast for today Saturday 18 May indicate an improvement in the situation in Northern Italy, with moderate instability limited mainly to the Alpine and pre-Alpine areas, and some occasional incursions into the northern plains, mainly in Piedmont. However, thunderstorms are expected in the Alps and Pre-Alps and in the central-western foothill areas in the afternoon. Temperatures will drop slightly in the Centre-South, with weak or moderate winds from the south and slightly rough or locally rough seas. Scattered clouds and some showers are expected in the afternoon in the center and south, but the situation should improve towards the evening.

Starting from Monday 20 May, a new worsening is expected in the central regions, Sardinia and the North-West, with intense and locally deluge phenomena which could affect much of the North and Centre. Sicily will also be affected by mild thunderstorms. Tuesday 21 May could be the most critical moment, with hailstorms and the risk of intense cloudbursts especially in the North, while Wednesday 22 May should see an initial improvement, with scattered clouds and large clearings across much of the country.

Despite the temporary truce, the weather situation remains unstable and subject to sudden changes, so it is advisable to stay updated on the forecast and take appropriate precautionary measures. Don’t forget your umbrella and consult the directions on the Civil Protection website.
