Craig McKinlay, 57, said he wanted to be known as the “first robot MP” when he returns to the House of Commons with prosthetic legs and hands after the life-threatening accident last year.
He joked that his new limbs meant he was breaking Parliament’s dress code by wearing trainers and not wearing a suit jacket, adding: “This is an emotional day for me.”
For his part, Sunak said McKinlay was an “inspiration”, and Parliament Speaker Lindsay Hoyle described him as “the man of the moment”.
In sepsis, the immune system overreacts to the infection and the body begins to damage its own organs.
McKinlay said he went to bed feeling sick, and within a day his body turned blue.
He spent 16 days in a coma and woke up to find that his arms and legs had turned black.
His limbs were amputated last December.
