Tropical Storm Alberto formed this Wednesday morning in the Gulf of Mexico from potential tropical cyclone one, according to what was announced by the National Meteorological Service of the National Water Commission (Conagua). The estimate is that this storm will make landfall on the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruz on Wednesday night or during the early hours of this Thursday.
The center of Alberto was located 250 kilometers east-northwest of Cabo Rojo, Veracruz, and 300 km east of Tampico, in the State of Tamaulipas, with sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour, gusts of 85 km/h and displacement towards west, 15 km/h.
Torrential rains are expected in at least seven states of the country due to the entry of this tropical storm. In Coahuila, Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas and Veracruz, rainfall of 150 to 250 millimeters is expected, while intense rains, of 75 to 150 mm, are forecast in Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and northeast of Zacatecas.
In other entities, the intensity of the rains ranges from very strong for the States of Guanajuato, Tlaxcala and Yucatán; strong in the State of Mexico, and some showers (5 to 25 mm) in Mexico City and Morelos.
The torrential and intense rains are expected to be accompanied by electrical shocks and possible hail, which could generate landslides, increased levels of rivers and streams, as well as overflows and flooding in areas of the aforementioned states. “The population, tourists and maritime navigation are urged to take extreme precautions against rain, wind and high waves, heed the warnings of the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the National Water Commission (Conagua) and follow the instructions. Civil Protection recommendations,” the agency mentions.
