The soldiers involved in the accident were all originally from Valtellina: the oldest was just 35 years old.
Tragedy in the mountains for three young soldiers of the Alpine Rescue of the Guardia di Finanza who lost their lives today, Wednesday 29 May, falling into the void during an exercise.
They were close to the Asteroid cliff in the municipality of Val Masino, in Sondrio, during a high altitude exercise. The very bad and unexpected episode occurred when a rock suddenly gave way under the soldiers’ feet, causing the team to fall while the boys were training to improve their skills, as required by the training, in view of the usual operations in the mountains of Valtellina and Valchiavenna.

The alarm was raised shortly before 1pm, immediately after the disastrous event that led to the death of the three young Alpine Rescue soldiers. The victims they were 32, 25 and 22 years old and belonged to the Sagf station of Madesimo and that of Sondrio.
The Carabinieri and the magistrate on duty from the Sondrio Prosecutor’s Office, directed by Piero Basilone, intervened at the scene of the accident. The soldiers involved in the accident were all originating from Valtellina: the eldest lived in the Tirano area and was active in Lieutenant Christian Maioglio’s team at the Provincial Command of the GdF. The other two were originally from Bormio and were part of the team led by Alessia Guanella in Madesimo, in the upper Spluga Valley.

The Senate observed a minute of silence in memory of the three soldiers. The president of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, expressed his condolences on behalf of the entire regional council for the painful accident. The event, in Fontana’s words, represents “a profound and sad blow for the entire community”.
The regional councilor for Civil Protection, Romano La Russa, also addressed a thought to the families of the victims, praising the young soldiers for their commitment and sacrifice in serving the community. The Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, expressed “with immense pain” and on behalf of the entire team of the Ministry of Defense, his deepest condolences to the families of the three missing soldiers.
