The organization “Street Brigade in Support Elisa Martínez” has detected a high rate of syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among the migrant population on the southern border of Mexico. According to the tests carried out, three out of every 10 migrants in the area test positive for one of these diseases.
Cristian Gomez Fuentesresponsible for the organization in Tapachula, Chiapas, mentioned that the sIphilis is the most prevalent STI among migrantsespecially in the Cuban population.
The brigade offers free and rapid tests for detect these diseases and, in case of a positive result, treatment and medical follow-up are provided.
Leonel Vega Diaz, a Cuban migrant, recommends his compatriots to protect themselves and use condoms to avoid the spread of these diseases. He also mentioned the existence of health centers such as “Capacit Tapachula” where testing and medical care for STIs are offered.
Rosemberg López Samayoa, president of “A Friendly Hand in the Fight against AIDS”, agrees with the seriousness of the problem and the need to involve immigration authorities in prevention and access to information for migrants. The organization serves around 400 migrants a month, providing them medical care and support.
Briseida, a Venezuelan migrant, recognizes the importance of medical care for migrants and highlights the need to detect and treat diseases in time.
The high incidence of STIs in the migrant population reflects the humanitarian crisis that Mexico is experiencing. In 2023, the country reported a 77% annual increase in irregular migration, with more than 782,000 people.
It is necessary that authorities implement measures to guarantee access to sexual and reproductive health for the migrant population, including the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of STIs.
