Tesla is considered the best-selling electric car brand, but in Europe another electric model is now leading the way in sales.
The Fiat 500 took the top spot on the bestseller list of electric cars in April. With 5,524 new registrations, the Italian city car finished ahead of the Peugeot e-208, of which 3,370 left the showroom. The Skoda Enyaq finished third with 3,645 units, according to figures from data analyst Jato† We only find the first German car in sixth place. That is the ID.4 with 2,982 new registrations.
Tesla was in first place last month
The Tesla Model 3 did not make the top ten. This may seem striking, but it is a well-known phenomenon at the beginning of the quarter because the current stock is sold and no new shiploads have arrived in Europe yet. Last month, the Tesla Model 3 was still number one with 23,013 new registrations. The Tesla Model Y finished two places behind with 18,968 units sold. (text continues below the photo)
The Peugeot 208 was the best-selling car
When it comes to plug-in hybrids, the Ford Kuga PHEV once again tops the sales charts with 3,413 new registrations. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2,738 pieces) and Volvo XC40 (2,584 pieces) follow at a considerable distance. The most popular car, regardless of the drive type, was again the Peugeot 208 with 15,615 new registrations. The VW T-Roc (13,998 units) and Dacia Sandero (12,913 units) followed suitably. The VW Golf didn’t make the top ten.
Total market down 20 percent
Plug-in cars (EVs and PHEVs) account for a 19 percent market share in new sales. Petrol cars have a share of 59 percent and diesels 19 percent. Overall, Volkswagen is the leader with a market share of 18.2% in the electric car market. The total car market in Europe fell 20 percent last month to 821,000 cars sold due to shortages of raw materials, chips and wiring harnesses.
