The PP and Vox have reached an agreement to govern together in the City Council of Cartagena, the second most populated city in the Region of Murcia, where since May 28, the Popular Party, which was the most voted list, had been governing in a minority . The agreement, which was formalized this Thursday, comes after the Popular Party failed on October 20 to move forward with its proposal for tax ordinances for 2024. PP and Vox already govern in coalition in the autonomous community and in four other municipalities.
After the municipal elections on May 28, the PP took over the mayorship of 33 of the 45 municipalities of the autonomous community. In 15 of them, including the capital, it governs with an absolute majority and in another four, in which it had not been the most voted list (Molina de Segura, Cieza, Puerto Lumbreras and Las Torres de Cotillas), it reached government agreements with Vox.
There remained, therefore, another 14 municipalities in which the PP presides over the minority councils. Until yesterday, when the popular people reached an agreement with those of Santiago Abascal to introduce them into the Government of Cartagena and thus guarantee the approval of the municipal budgets for the rest of the legislature.
In the coastal city, the second by population of the autonomous community, with about 217,000 inhabitants, the team led by the popular Noelia Arroyo had 10 councilors out of a total of 27. The second most voted force, the local Citizen Movement party, with eight councillors, was vetoed in advance for a possible pact with the PP, as was the PSOE, with four. Vox obtained another four and the local Sí Cartagena party, one.
Arroyo has been governed as a minority in recent months, but with the imminent need to carry out the budgets for next year and the tax ordinances, the pressure from Vox to become part of the local government has been increasing. The turning point was the plenary session on October 20, when the ultras united their vote against the proposed tax ordinances with that of the rest of the opposition, preventing its approval. In the agreement signed this Thursday, Vox commits to now support this deletion as proposed, without any modification, in order to meet the deadlines for it to come into force on January 1. They also commit to carrying out the municipal budgets for the next four years “in a timely manner”, to review the General Urban Planning Plan and to increase investments until they reach 60 million euros at the end of the legislature.
