Last September 13 Square Enix surprisingly launched Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden. This is yet another sequel in this saga of card RPGs with the hand of Yoko Taro, creator of drakengard Y NieR: Automata.
Since we have played its previous two installments, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to complete the trilogy. Now that we played it in its entirety, we tell you what we thought and if you should give this peculiar RPG a chance.
Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden has perhaps the most mature story in the saga
In Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burdenyou take control of a girl named Al’e, who seeks revenge after the destruction of her village. On her journey she is accompanied by new characters that we will not spoil. But we assure you that there will be many twists and turns and unexpected situations.
From the beginning it seemed to us that this story is darker than its predecessors. While in those permeates a sense of adventure. Here we find ourselves with darker motivations and even a world that appears much more barren. But that helps set this third installment apart.
Once again, everything is narrated by an omnipresent voice, which on this occasion is that of a woman. Its tonalities help keep you hooked into the narrative and it really sells the feeling of playing something Dungeons & Dragons style.. With surprise events and some decisions that the player must make here and there.
Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden continues the series’ tradition of giving us stories with deep backstories. On this occasion we find a narrative of revenge that later makes us wonder what a life without purpose is.. A perfect combination with its entertaining gameplay to keep you hooked until the end.
The gameplay remains almost the same, with some changes
For those who don’t know Voice of Cards these games introduce us to worlds made entirely of cards. Characters, enemies, and settings are presented as static images. Also, the map starts with many face down cards that are flipped over as you explore. Sometimes they reveal villages or hidden treasures.
The player is represented by a small piece that is moving. When there are clashes the stage changes to take the form of a dice table. This is where the combat takes place that feels very inspired by the RPGs of yesteryear.

Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden It has a turn-based combat where you select the action you will do. The difference is that some of the more powerful abilities require gems. These replenish after each move you make, plus there are some actions that can help you generate more.
Here we also find a system of weaknesses, where certain types of attacks are more effective against certain enemies. This opens the door to quite a bit of experimentation on the part of the player. And that we have not mentioned one of the new additions to this installment.
Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden makes enemies your best allies
One of the novelties of Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden is that it allows you to control your enemies. LThe protagonist has the ability to use the beasts’ abilities at will and this is represented by an in-game mechanic.
Sometimes at the end of the confrontations you can get enemy cards, with different abilities. These are also divided into levels, which can reach up to 5 stars. So you may want to be hunting for new ones in search of improvement.

In addition to finding these cards in the field, Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden add a new store. The pet shop is a place where you can spend your money to get new and better monster cards. Best of all, not only Al’e can take advantage of them.
These serve as abilities that you can grant to any of your characters. So in a certain way you can customize its function to your liking. For example, we decided to have Al’e only have attack abilities. While his companions attacked with different states or served as support with cards that grant benefits.
Should you play it or not?
With Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden we believe that the saga continues to cement itself as something unmissable for RPG fans. Especially for those who loved those of yesteryear, with turn-based combat and very fanciful elements. Also quite simple to understand, so that anyone can take it and enjoy it.
It is a game that will take you 8-10 hours to complete, with an engaging story, unique presentation, and entertaining gameplay. Although we must admit that, despite the addition of the ‘beasts’ system, it remains quite similar to its predecessors.

Still, we think you should give it a try if you’re looking for a good, pretty, cheap RPG. Since its cost is not very high and it is a good investment in exchange for the hours of play it gives you. We also want to take the opportunity to recommend his two previous adventures. If you become a fan of Voice of Cardsdo not forget to tell us in our Discord.
