Currently, the Ministry of Social Development allocates R$20,000 to city halls for groups of 50 people
The extraordinary minister for the reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul, Paulo Pimentastated this Sunday (May 19, 2024) that he is studying changing an ordinance to pay directly to people or institutions that host families affected by heavy rains in the State of Rio Grande do Sul.
“If I shelter 4 people in my house, I will receive R$1,600 per month in solidarity. With this, trying to work with the perspective of decentralizing shelters and this logic of temporary cities”declared the minister in an interview with the YouTube channel, Barão de Itararé, this Sunday (May 19).
Currently, the Ministry of Social Development and Combating Hunger allocates R$20,000 to city halls, which pass the money on to groups of 50 people sheltered in public shelters, R$400 per person, in addition to food and basic food baskets.
Pimenta also said that the transition will have to be discussed with the shelters and associations that welcomed the homeless, as they have no obligation to provide food or medicine.
According to the latest Civil Defense bulletin of Rio Grande do Sul, published at 12pm this Sunday (May 19), 617,581 are outside their houses in the State due to the floods that affect the State. Until the most recent update, the rains had already caused 155 deaths and left 89 missing and 806 injured.
According to the survey, there are 463 municipalities affected by the climate disaster. Around 2.3 million residents were harmed by the storms, including those who were displaced, homeless or without water or energy in their homes.
