Norris and Piastri are champing at the bit
There McLaren it is the team that by far holds the record for victories in Monaco, 15 against Ferrari’s 9. With six victories, Ayrton Senna is the most successful driver in the Principality and this weekend McLaren will pay homage to him with a yellow-green livery inspired by the characteristic colors of the Brazilian driver 30 years after his death.
For several years now, McLaren has not appeared in Monaco with well-founded ambitions of victory. This time, however, the team led by Andrea Stella has all it takes to aim to break the fasting that has lasted since 2008 when Lewis Hamilton, later world champion, won. Norris finished second in China, won in Miami and finished second again in Imola, a position that could have been within Oscar Piastri’s reach had he not received the – correct – three-place grid penalty for the impediment in Q1 to the detriment of Kevin Magnussen.
Norris and Piastri are two specialists in Qualifying, which is fundamental in Monaco, so they will be two formidable opponents for both Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc without forgetting Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz who in the past have always put their illustrious pit mates in the Principality in difficulty . “It will be very important to get a good start straight away in FP1 and gradually gain confidence – said Norris – Monaco Qualifying is one of the most exciting sessions in all of motorsport.”. “The last two weekends in Miami and Imola have been among my best in F1 – added Piastri – I’m arriving in Munich with excellent momentum.”. The team principal Andrea Stella commented thus on the special livery dedicated to Ayrton Senna: “Monaco is also a special place for McLaren. Here we have won many races in the past with Ayrton Senna, so it is right to pay homage to him by racing with a very special livery inspired by his helmet.”
