The president of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Marcio Pochmann, criticized what he calls the “neoliberal prescription”. “Insisting on the continuity of the neoliberal prescription throws more and more water into the remodeled Nazi-fascist mill”, he wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) this Saturday morning (15).
The economist did not specify what he classifies as neoliberalism, but the expression is related to the reduction of public spending. The publication was made following the recent tension in the domestic financial market, motivated in part by fears that the federal government would be disinclined to balance public accounts by cutting expenses – a perception that has been partially reversed since Thursday, following statements by the minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, and the Minister of Planning, Simone Tebet.
The current level of the basic interest rate was also criticized by Pochmann on the social network. He points out that, even though the Selic has fallen nominally, the real interest rate remains “exorbitant”. The consequences of this on the national economy, according to the president of IBGE, are the accumulation of bank profits and the high cost of paying interest on debt.
“In this scenario, there can hardly be a sustainable fiscal surplus, nor a reduction in the level of public debt, except the destruction of the public sector with deepening underdevelopment and external dependence”, he wrote.
