The leader of the PSOE in the Community of Madrid, Juan Lobato, announced this Thursday that he will propose to the federal leadership of his party to file a complaint against the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, for a phrase uttered this Thursday in the Assembly following of the recognition of Palestine as a State promoted by the Government of Spain (formed by PSOE and Sumar). “They intend for democracies to do the same with Hamas as with ETA,” Ayuso said during the weekly control session with her Executive. “You kill, and I will give you an autonomous community,” he continued. “You kill, I will give you a State. “That is the message you are giving,” he added. The socialists have seen in those words the statement that the PSOE “has incited” ETA to kill, despite the fact that Ayuso has not uttered that verb, nor was he addressing this party in his speech, nor has he mentioned it explicitly, and therefore That’s why Lobato has decided to file a lawsuit with a very difficult judicial process. “It is an artificial controversy,” reacted the general secretary of the Madrid PP, Alfonso Serrano, who stressed that his party has always defended that “terrorism can never be rewarded.”
“It is a regrettable spectacle,” Lobato said at a press conference in the regional Assembly. “Mrs. Ayuso has accused the PSOE of inciting ETA to kill, directly,” he said. “We already knew that there were no limits, but this seems disgusting to me, directly disgusting. The PSOE will have to decide at the federal level, but I am in favor of responding to Ayuso with seriousness, respect and complaints,” she announced. “I don’t know if a lawsuit will succeed or not. Mrs. Ayuso has us used to saying atrocities, nonsense, false things that can amount to insults or slander against those of us who are representatives of the PSOE,” he continued. “There are two options. One: let’s all get involved. Another: respond with seriousness, respect, and at the same time with complaints,” he concluded.
Lobato’s protests have been echoed in the Chamber. One after another, the socialist interveners have taken advantage of their turn to speak to Ayuso for his reference to Hamas and ETA. In fact, the Madrid socialists have already submitted their request to the federal level and it is already being evaluated by the party’s legal services. “It’s not a phrase. It is an incitement to terrorism and to kill,” said a socialist source trusted by Lobato. “What we do not want to prosper is this type of politics or the impunity of saying whatever you want,” he added. “We lose if we don’t try,” he summarized.
“But the complaint has no future, I think,” said another source from the Madrid PSOE, where they will also explore the possibility of filing a civil lawsuit. In any case, the PP has denied the majority. First, with the argument that Ayuso was responding to Más Madrid and was referring to a phrase by the vice president, Yolanda Díaz – “Palestine will be free from the river to the sea” -. And second, by insisting that the conservative leader has not accused anyone of inciting to kill.
“It is an artificial controversy,” said Serrano, the general secretary of the Madrid conservatives. “We are not opposed to the existence of a Palestinian State, but not like this, in a rush, with democracies rewarding those who kill,” he continued. “The president was talking about democracies, in a response to Más Madrid. What we do not understand is why the PSOE has taken the hint, when in this controversy Mr. Lobato did not have a problem.”
