Life imprisonment for Fausta Bonino, the nurse from Piombino accused of killing patients with lethal injection
Fausta Bonino, the nurse at the Piombino hospital (Livorno) who ended up on trial for the death of some patients, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Court of Assizes of Appeal in the second degree trial, after the Cassation had the woman’s acquittal was annulled. The deaths occurred between 2014 and 2015. Initially, Bonino was accused of ten deaths: in the first instance she was sentenced to life imprisonment for four, on appeal she was acquitted. Then came the Supreme Court, which ordered a new appeal for four dead patients, confirming the acquittal for the other six cases.
The deputy attorney general had requested a life sentence for Bonino. The nurse was accused of causing the deaths of four patients by injecting them with heparin, an anticoagulant which, if taken in large quantities, causes internal bleeding. The woman has always professed her innocence.
