Do you ever ask yourself: what will I be driving in ten years? Volkswagen is now attempting to answer that question for you, with this Gen.Travel concept car – a car that you no longer have to drive yourself. Now we have been hearing for decades that self-driving cars are going to take over the market. Will it really happen this time?
It’s not that the Gen.Travel concept car necessarily wants you away from the wheel. He’s more focused on something else: airplanes, especially the little ones that travel short distances. These kinds of flights are significantly worse for Mother Nature than a ride in this car.

The idea is therefore not that you buy this car old-fashioned, but that you book it. Just like an airplane, so. The Gen.Travel has room for four people. In the middle of those four people is a table on which you can play a solid game of cards. You can change this layout to a two-seater set-up where you can lie back and take a nap. Finally, there is a family mode where augmented reality keeps your kids busy.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, the range is increased. What should also help with that is platooning. This is already being used in electric trucks. In platooning, cars drive coupled to each other in a convoy (platoon). The first car acts as a leader and the rest follow like a wagon. Whether you will ever really start driving in column with this self-driving car from Volkswagen remains to be seen.
Volkswagen does not oblige itself to actually build the car. However, the prototype does work, so the technology should already be usable. However, ‘individual features’ of this prototype could come in handy with today’s production cars, such as those beautiful wheels – or perhaps the comfortable seats? The self-driving capabilities; no, not quite yet.
