Insects|Bedbugs are small insects, some of which suck blood. Sometimes there can be a huge number of them in certain places, and then their presence cannot be ignored.
Mäkäräites may be the cause of the sudden deaths of cows in Sweden. Several grazing cows have died in the spring in the southern parts of the country, and according to the media, “massive moose attacks” are considered the most likely explanation.
It tells about it, among other things Aftonbladet.
Entomologist and stream water ecologist Jari Ilmonen considers the explanation possible.
“After all, there are these in the world. It would be an exaggeration to say that this is common, but they do happen.”
From Sweden, Ilmonen remembers having heard of similar cases before, in Finland at most rare isolated cases.
About the Mäkäräs i.e. it is well-known that the mäkäri is a problem for other living things. They are small blood-sucking insects that saw off pieces of skin. The bite leaves a red spot.
For example the dogs may be in trouble, if a large number of bugs attack you. People also get symptoms, because the bug’s saliva irritates the skin and itches. The feeling can be unbearable if you happen to be in the middle of a swarm of insects. Problems can also arise if the bumps become inflamed.
“Like mosquitoes, midges secrete substances that keep the blood flowing and thus help them feed,” says Ilmonen.
Ilmonen says that he heard from a bird ringer he knows that this spring there have been a lot of plovers in places in southern Finland as well.
“I heard from him that the baby owls have been in trouble in southern Finland this spring.”

Warm ones the weather quickly brings nature back to life. This year, spring arrived like an explosion, says Ilmonen.
“In a spring like this, mosquitoes, midges, midges and fireflies might be in the air at the same time.”
Newts are insects of flowing waters. Their larvae grow in both large rapids and small streams.
Dozens of different species of woodpeckers are known in Finland. Most are not interested in humans and not all suck blood at all.
According to Ilmonen, it is not known very well whether the cause of the unlucky animal’s death is the substances secreted by the bug or skin irritation.
It’s every in this case, it’s easy to imagine that thousands of bites can be a big burden for an animal, says the entomologist Marko Mutane from the University of Oulu.
“After all, they are an incredible problem for reindeer in the north, and cattle, however, have not adapted here in quite the same way.”
Mäkärää deposits vary locally. There may be a lot of them near the stream at times, says Mutanen.
Ten years ago a hiker was taken by helicopter for treatment due to a moose bite in Lapland. It’s rare, but Mutanen remembers times from his own trips when a swarm of insects would have been unbearable with the wrong equipment.
“I remember very well one time in Muonio, when there were absolutely unbearably many skunks. That amount was so incredible that it would not have been possible to be there.”
