Flags were flown at half-mast in the German capital, Berlin, to mourn the passing of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
German flags and the European Union flag at half-mast in front of the Chancellery in Berlin coincides with the funeral and burial of Gorbachev’s body in the Russian capital, Moscow.
The state of Berlin also flew its flag in mourning for its honorary citizen, Gorbachev.
Berlin State Interior Minister Erich Schprager said the state appropriately acknowledged Gorbachev’s achievements “in the political transformation of the German Democratic Republic (former East Germany)”, adding: “By signing the Treaty of Two Plus Four, Gorbachev paved the way for reunification.” Germany and Berlin.

Gorbachev died in Moscow last Tuesday, at the age of 91. Through his reform policies, the former Soviet Union president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate was considered one of the fathers of German unity and a pioneer in ending the Cold War.
