FIFA released a report on Saturday showing a marked rise in insults directed at footballers on social media during international competitions.
That is why the organization will work out a plan together with the players’ union FIFPro. This is “to protect teams, players, umpires and supporters,” it said in a statement.
The report identified more than 400,000 published posts on social media during the Euro 2021 semi-finals and finals and the 2022 Africa Cup, showing that more than half of the players were insulted. Moreover, the insults largely came from compatriots. Homophobic and racist comments were the most common.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino: ,,Unfortunately, we see a worrying trend in publishing unacceptable messages. This form of discrimination has no place in football. We will do everything we can to limit this, including with technical aids.”
