Retracing the dramatic 2021 season and the title fight between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, the fourth season of “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” will hit screens on 11 March.
The 10-episode series will launch just 9 days before the Bahrain Grand Prix which opens the 2022 season.
“Offering unprecedented access, Season 4 will once again take fans behind the scenes, to witness firsthand how the drivers and teams prepare to fight for victory in one of the sport’s most dramatic seasons to date. “, reads a joint statement from F1 and Netflix.
“Get ready to deepen the fierce rivalries between the teams, the unexpected podiums and the intense battle for the title between Mercedes and Red Bull, as the pressure reaches an all-time high both on and off the starting grid.”
The series will once again be produced by Box to Box Films, with Academy Award winner James Gay-Rees (Amy, Senna) and Paul Martin (Diego Maradona) serving as executive producers.
The success of Drive to Survive’s first three seasons helped raise the global profile of F1 among audiences around the world, enjoying particular success in the United States.
Season 3 was the most watched show on Netflix at the time of its release last year, and it achieved the difficult feat of making it past the first season in terms of viewership.
The crews were once again integrated into the teams over the course of the 2021 season, capturing behind-the-scenes footage and covering many of the off-track stories.
This will be the first season of Drive to Survive in which there will be a duel for the title at the last race, which will take place between Verstappen and Hamilton in Abu Dhabi with a controversial ending to say the least.
However, Verstappen’s presence shouldn’t be too heavy, given that last October he revealed that he would no longer release the interview and Netflix, even accusing the series of giving life to “false rivalries”.
The success of the series has also led to some concerns about the balance between entertainment and sport for F1, particularly in the wake of what happened on the last lap in Abu Dhabi to decide the title.
