European football championships|Breel Embolo, who has recovered from a knee injury, sealed the victory for Switzerland.
Switzerland got off to a flying start to the European Championship final tournament, when Hungary lost 3–1 in the A group match played in Cologne.
Switzerland thus rose to the top of the group on equal points with tournament host Germany. Germany crushed Scotland 5-1 in the opening match of the Games on Friday evening.
Switzerland had a particularly convincing pace in the opening half, when first Kwadwo Duah struck by Michel Aebischer from the pass 1–0 and then Aebischer shook handsomely 2–0.
For Duah, who was born in London and plays professionally in Bulgaria, the goal was the first in the A national team, and it came in only the second international match of his career. Aebischer also got to celebrate his debut goal in the national team shirt.
Top scorer in the Hungarian national team and in his club team Ferencvaros Barnabas Varga brought Hungary into the game with his 66th minute strike. Hungary’s hopes of a handsome rise to the points base were, however, interrupted in extra time by the Substitute Breel Embolo with his 3–1 goal.
The hit came about in an amazing way. Embolo, who is recovering from a knee injury, played with a knee brace on his leg, but the brace came off after he ran away to drive through. It didn’t slow down Embolo’s progress, but the top man definitely finished and cheered happily.
“The opening half was really bad for us. Switzerland have a very experienced squad with quality throughout and are a very physical group. When we narrowed to 1–2, we pressed hard and were close to another goal with Varga’s move. But Switzerland used their experience, slowed down the game and the tempo. That last-minute conceded goal was very frustrating, the coach of Hungary, ranked as one of Europe’s emerging football nations Marco Rossi summed up by UEFA, the European football confederation on the pages.”
The group continues on Wednesday with the matches Germany-Hungary and Scotland-Switzerland.
