The pension reform project promoted by the Government of Gustavo Petro received the approval of the Senate, an achievement for the ruling party after the massive demonstrations against it last weekend. What are the pillars of the reform? We tell them.
At the close of Tuesday, April 23, the Colombian Senate approved, in a second debate, the pension reform promoted by President Gustavo Petro. Now, the project will go through the House of Representatives, which will define whether or not to convert it into law.
After the approval, the bench of the ruling party Historic Pact celebrated shouting “yes we could.”
The project aims to maintain the retirement age at 57 years for women and 62 years for menjust as he wants to expand the pension system so that everyone can benefit from some type of payment, even without having contributed enough in salaries.
In that sense, The life annuity will be for those over 65 years of age who have contributed between 150 and 999 weekss, and it will depend on the weeks and the contribution that the State gives, so that they receive their monthly payment. Furthermore, the initiative aims to establish a subsidy for people in extreme poverty and vulnerable conditions.
“This is the equity that this bill achieves, but above all that three million older adults can begin to enjoy this benefit as of July 1, 2025, which is the term in which this bill enters,” he expressed. the Minister of Labor, Gloria Inés Ramírez, after approval in the Senate.
The project must undergo two debates in the House of Representatives before June 20 to become law, a procedure in which the Government is very short on time.
However, this approval is a point in favor of the Government, which days ago received the rejection of thousands of people who took to the streets to demonstrate against the economic reforms.
The demonstration, which took place on Sunday, April 21, and was replicated in several Colombian cities, came after a Senate committee earlier this month rejected a health reform proposal aimed at stripping power from private insurers and expand access to health care.
