The party of democracy moves once again to the South American country, where more than 38 million inhabitants are eligible to vote for the president who will occupy the presidential chair in the four years ahead. The polls opened at 8 a.m. local time and will close at 6 p.m. at the 112,897 tables set up. The contest will be defined between the leftist Gustavo Petro and the populist Rodolfo Hernández, initiating a new era in Colombian politics.
This Sunday the people of Colombia will put to a vote the direction that the nation will take in the coming years, when they go to the polls for the second round of the presidential elections.
After a disputed primary and a shallow campaign in recent weeks, citizens will have leftist Gustavo Petro and right-wing populist Rodolfo Hernández on the ballot, who are head-to-head in the polls.
Whichever of them wins the right to be the tenant of the Casa de Nariño will represent a change in national politics. The resolution will be in the hands of the more than 38 million Colombians who are eligible to attend the 112,897 voting centers, which opened at 8 in the morning and will close at 6.
The Registry affirmed that the transparency of the result will be “guaranteed”. The monitoring also includes more than 71,000 witnesses of the Historical Pact and more than 52,000 of the League of Anticorruption Governors, formations of Petro and Hernández, respectively.
For its part, there will also be eight accredited international observation missions, more than 410 observers from foreign entities and NGOs from 33 countries.
To provide peace of mind in the electoral process for citizens, the Police will deploy more than 94,000 troops throughout the country, in joint work with the Army with the mission of “providing the conditions that allow the contest to take place democratic with normality”.
Duque kicked off election day
As happened in the primaries last May, outgoing president Iván Duque went to his polling station at table number 1 of the National Capitol, being one of the first citizens to cast his vote.
