Green light from the Council of Ministers
As widely announced in recent weeks, the Government laid the formal foundation stone for the realization of the Bridge over the Strait of Messina, which will unite Calabria and Sicily. As reported by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport there was the green light, now at the end of today’s Council of Ministers. Thus, the Strait of Messina Society will be reborn, which will have a new and more modern governance and which will see a solid participation of Mef and Mit.
We will therefore start again from the 2011 project, which will be adapted to the new technical, safety and environmental standards. It will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, 3.2 km, which it will represent “the flagship of the Italian engineering art“, as stated on the ministry’s website.
As underlined by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, the work will have a strong green footprint and will be a source of great tourist attraction, with the precise aim of making the bridge “a driving force for infrastructural growth for both regions, which will have their own director on the corporate board”.
Politicians comment
Satisfaction from the Minister for Civil Protection and Marine Policies, In Musumeci: “The decree-law constitutes a first concrete step towards the creation of a strategic infrastructure expected over a century. The bridge will allow, together with high-speed railways, modernized roads and equipped ports, to make the Southern Italy the logistic base of Europe in the Mediterranean”.
Silvio Berlusconi on social media he expressed his satisfaction for the next realization of the work that has been his workhorse for years: “The bridge represents the idea of the future that we have always had. Already 20 years ago with my government we had the project ready, a strategic work that would have taken place if the left hadn’t intervened with the no policy. This time they won’t stop us. With the new connection it will start a flywheel for the Sicilian economy which will guarantee employment to more than one hundred thousand people and Sicily will thus be able to become a base for the logistics of international transport arriving from the Mediterranean”.
Matthew Salvini he then spread a message about YouTube: “Today is a historic day, not only for Sicily and Calabria, but for all of Italy. After 50 years of talk, this Council of Ministers approves the bridge that connects Sicily to the rest of Italy and to Europe. The bridge over the Strait is the greenest work in the world, real work for tens of thousands of people for many years. It will be an absolutely safe work that will be certified by the greatest engineers of the best Italian and international universities: the most beautiful, safest and greenest single span bridge in the world”.
