The news was in the air, but now it’s official: Intel and AMD have confirmed that Copilot+ features will not be available on their hardware when the platform launches next week. Currently, only Qualcomm Snapdragon X laptops, scheduled to launch on June 18, will support these new features. Competitors that have already introduced their next-generation mobile platforms, which support similar or higher AI performance, will not support these features at launch, but will receive an update later.
Copilot+ features include technologies such as Auto Super Resolutionwhich improves framerates in games by dynamically adjusting screen resolution and using advanced upscaling algorithms powered by the built-in neural processing unit.
But if you have been following us, you already know everything, because we have already talked about Super Automatic Resolution, and the list of games that will support it, in recent weeks. This feature will only be available on Qualcomm X series devices when they launch next week. Below is a summary of when the Copilot Plus features will arrive on different platforms.
Microsoft Copilot+ feature support:
- Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series: at launch (June 18, 2024)
- AMD Ryzen AI 300 “Strix Point”: Available via update after launch (July 2024)
- Intel Core Ultra 200V “Lunar Lake”: Available via update after launch (July-September 2024)
The missing functions
However, Automatic Super Resolution will not be the only feature missing from launch, and not just on AMD and Intel devices. Another feature is Recall, Microsoft’s tool that periodically takes screenshots and lets users query generative AI memory to search for and retrieve information instantly. Lo and behold, after security researchers demonstrated that this feature has significant issues due to the ease with which it can be accessed, Microsoft has now confirmed that this feature has been delayed and will not be available at launch on any Copilot+ PCs.
Other features that Intel and AMD platforms will not have at launch are Restyle Image And Cocreator. The first is an AI-powered feature that allows users to change the style of an image based on pre-trained models (such as different art styles). The second is a feature in Paint that allows users to turn simple sketches into real works of art. It’s worth noting though that image generation software is easily available through third-party software or online tools at this point.
Speaking of third-party software, while official Microsoft features may not be available, there is software that uses NPUs, such as Adobe, DaVinci Resolve, and CapCut. These should work regardless of Microsoft Copilot+ certification, as they connect directly to the NPU.
