Explosions have been reported all over Ukraine this morning, and according to the news agency Interfax, Russian troops have already arrived in Odessa and Mariupol, among others.
According to Biden, the United States and its NATO allies will decide on a “weighty and united” response. He said he would report later Thursday on the consequences that await Russia.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg describes Russia’s decision to attack Ukraine as ill-considered and unprovoked.
“I strongly condemn Russia’s reckless and unprovoked attack on Ukraine, which endangers the lives of countless civilians. Once again, despite repeated warnings and tireless efforts to pursue diplomacy, Russia has chosen to attack the sovereign and independent country,” Stoltenberg said early.
Stoltenberg says NATO members will meet on Thursday to respond to the Russian attack.
President Sauli Niinistö condemned Russia’s military action in Ukraine early Thursday morning.
“I strongly condemn Russia’s military action in Ukraine. Russia’s actions are against Ukraine, but at the same time they are attacking the entire European security order. We have deep sympathy for Ukraine and are looking for ways to increase our support for Ukraine,” Niinistö wrote on Twitter.
Also the Prime Minister Sanna Marin (sd) announced early on Twitter on Twitter that it strongly condemned Russia’s actions.
“The attack blatantly violates international law and endangers the lives of numerous civilians. Finland expresses its strong support for Ukraine and the Ukrainians. We are looking for ways to increase our support for them. ”
Marin also said that the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy of the Government will meet in the morning.
European President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen said the EU would hold the Russian regime accountable for the unjustified attack on Ukraine.
“In these gloomy hours, our thoughts are with Ukraine and with innocent women, men and children facing this unprovoked attack and fear for their lives,” von der Leyen wrote on Twitter.
“We will hold the Kremlin accountable.”
EU leaders will hold an emergency meeting in Brussels later Thursday, according to Reuters news agency. The EU announced economic sanctions on Russia on Wednesday.
