Sirens began to sound for several minutes in Kiev around 7 am local time, which could be heard across the city.
The Russian military released a statement claiming it had not targeted Ukrainian cities, while journalists and social media posts reported explosions across the country.
“The Russian Armed Forces are not launching missiles or artillery attacks on Ukrainian cities. High-precision weapons destroy military infrastructure: military airfields, aviation, air defense facilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the statement read. “The civilian population is not at risk.”
Witnesses reported explosions in several cities in Ukraine and outside the Donbas region, where Putin announced a “special military operation” in the early hours of Thursday.
