The Maryland governor Wes Moore will sign pardons today for 175,000 people convicted of marijuana possession. This was reported by the ABC News broadcaster. Interviewed by the Washington Post, Moore said that these crimes were used, for example, to deny the right to housing, education or work.
“I’m thrilled that we have a real opportunity to right a lot of historical wrongs with what I’m signing,” Moore said. ”If you want to be able to create inclusive economic growth, that means you have to start removing these barriers that continue to disproportionately burden communities of color,” he added.
Recreational cannabis was legalized in Maryland in 2023 after voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2022.
