Fedez said he was “relieved” by the acquittal, declaring that he had always believed in justice. Perhaps, however, it didn’t end there.
Telenovela Fedez-Codacons, yet another episode is on air. Indeed, in court. In Rome, in fact, the judges acquitted him Fedez from the accusation of slander against Codacons. The prosecutor, during today’s hearing, requested a “no proceeding” for the rapper, putting an end to the trial that began in 2020.
This dispute had been going on for years, a case used several times to brand Fedez as a troublemaker for the consumer protection body. Fedez had been accused of accusing the Codacons of having published a misleading banner on its website during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The singer claimed that i funds raised by the association they would not have been used to build hospital wards for Covid patients, as was advertised. In fact, in the end, Fedez was right about good faith in having incorrectly interpreted the banner on the Codacons website. There was no desire to damage an institution but to express an opinion.
During the preliminary hearing, Fedez had the opportunity to answer questions from the preliminary hearing judge Marisa Mosetti for an hour and a half, providing his version of events and the reasons that led him to denounce Codacons.
The reasons why the Court acquitted Fedez have not yet been made public. However, it is possible to hypothesize that the judge considered that his accusations against Codacons were based on a sincere, albeit erroneous, belief and not on an intent to damage the association.
Fedez said he was “relieved” for theabsolution, declaring that he has always believed in justice. Codacons, however, announced an appeal. The case divided public opinion between those who defended the rapper’s actions, even denouncing him for slander, and those who lashed out against Fedez for being excessive and presumptuous against the institution. Regardless of the different opinions, however, the singer’s acquittal represents a “happy ending” (even if there will be an appeal) which, for the moment, remains an important signal of freedom of expression and the right to criticize.
