Canada evacuated thousands of residents in the west of the country, where hundreds of forest fires broke out on Sunday, while the fire season that began early appears to be difficult, according to federal authorities.
The fire is currently burning across nearly 2,500 hectares, and about 3,500 people had to be evacuated on Friday evening.
Fort Nelson Mayor Rob Fraser said mild weather conditions helped slow the fire’s progress overnight, but winds returning in the afternoon could make the situation worse.
The mayor added, “We are in a level five (highest) drought period, which makes fighting forest fires very difficult, but we will do our best to contain these fires.”
In 2023, Canada experienced the worst fire season in its history. The fires that swept the country from east to west destroyed more than 15 million hectares, claimed the lives of eight firefighters, and prompted the authorities to evacuate 230,000 people.
