In these days of mid-August it is circulating on the web a video of a single-seater, the size of a GP2, driven on a section of the Czech Republic motorway. It may seem curious, but it is neither legal nor intelligent to take to the streets with a car of this typeexcept in rare circumstances.
Not having a license plate or homologation to travel on road sections, a racing car cannot in any way be used outside its main area of use, namely the circuit. Our Highway Code is also restrictive for rally cars, just to understand the spirit: in fact, article 9 states that “vehicles participating in motorsport competitions can circulate, limited to travel within the competition route and for the time strictly necessary for them“.
In the case of a Formula 1 or its derivatives there is no circulation on public roads in any way, with the exception of the so-called ‘stunts’, that is transits to be requested by authorization to make videos, for advertising purposes or for events whose boundaries have been established together with the administration of the Municipality or Municipalities involved. Usually these events take place on closed roads.
The homologation of a single-seater for the purpose of transit is a useless undertaking to try to accomplish. For obvious reasons, such a vehicle it does not meet the basic requirements of any highway code in terms of equipment (arrows and headlights for example), tires, safety. In addition, even the noise can go beyond the allowed.
There is also an ethical question: driving a single-seater on normal roads, especially if they are of high power, can seriously endanger the safety of other road users. For this reason the video cited above is not a good example, in terms of the respect one should have for the rights of others; it seems more like a desperate and narcissistic need for attention.
