Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte was a Chilean soldier and politician who led the coup in Chile that overthrew the government of socialist Salvador Allende in 1973.. A year later, he would become the Supreme Chief of the Nation.

from the city of ValparaisoPinochet was born on November 25, 1915 and his parents were Augusto Pinochet Vera and Avelina Ugarte Martínez.
In 1943 he married Lucía Hiriart Rodríguez, daughter of Osvaldo Hiriart Corvalán, former senator of the Radical Party and Minister of State. He had five children: Lucía, Jacqueline, Verónica, Augusto and Marco Antonio.

According to data collected by the Library of the National Congress of Chile, in 1966 he achieved the rank of colonel and went on to direct the command of the IV division.
Two years later he was appointed Brigadier General and Commander-in-Chief of the VI Army Division.
On September 11, 1973, he led the coup that brought down the Popular Unity government of then-president Salvador Allende.
Under his command, a military and authoritarian regime would be established in Chile that lasted until 1990. This period was described as a time marked by great economic advances, but also by complaints against the government due to serious human rights violations.

After his death on December 10, 2006, he was honored as former Commander-in-Chief of the Army, but not as former President of the Republic.
Some consider him an inhuman dictator, while others see him as the hero who saved Chile from communism.
