United States.- Secretary of State Anthony Blinken reported Monday that the United States will allocate an additional 457.5 million dollars to improve the efforts of Ukraine’s police and criminal justice agencies.
Through a statement, Blinken explained that the new funds will be used to improve its operational capacity to save lives, “while continuing to help defend the Ukrainian people, their freedom and their democracy from the Kremlin’s brutal war of aggression.”
Since mid-December 2021, the statement recalls, the United States has allocated 645 million to protect the civil security of the European country, assistance that has had “a tangible and positive impact” on institutions such as the National Police of Ukraine (NPU) and the State Border Guard Service.
“Our provision of personal protective equipment, medical supplies and armored vehicles has significantly reduced the casualties of Ukrainian civilians and their defenders,” Blinken said.
Ukrainian law enforcement officials, he added, “remain resilient, motivated and determined to carry out their law enforcement missions and support innocent civilians in towns and cities facing continued Russian bombardment.”
A portion of this amount will go to support criminal justice agencies, including the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office and the NPU’s war crimes unit.
Blinken made this announcement a few hours after warning in an interview on CBS television that if Russia dares to use nuclear weapons “the consequences would be dire.”
