Aden (Al-Ittihad)
Yesterday, the United Nations called for the immediate release of 13 of its employees detained by the Houthi group in Yemen, saying that the group’s repressive practices indicate its unwillingness for peace. At the same time, the Yemeni government stressed that achieving peace and ending the conflict requires the presence of a real and serious partner.
The United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called for the immediate and unconditional release of 13 UN employees detained in Houthi detention centers in Yemen. This came according to the spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Liz Throssell, during a press conference she organized yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland. Throssell explained that “13 United Nations employees were kidnapped in the Yemeni cities of Sanaa, Hodeidah, and Hajjah.” She pointed out the arrest of many workers of national and international non-governmental organizations and organizations that support humanitarian aid activities. She noted that the employees have not been able to contact their families and United Nations officials since their detention on June 6. Throssell stated that the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Türk, is deeply concerned about the conditions of these detainees and calls for their immediate and unconditional release.
The United Nations announced that the Houthi group in Yemen had detained 13 of its employees, and its Secretary-General, António Guterres, called for “the immediate and unconditional release of all United Nations employees detained in Yemen by the Houthi group.” 40 countries also called on the Houthis to release their detained UN employees “immediately and unconditionally.”
In a related context, the UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, confirmed that the practices of the Houthi group, represented by the arrest of UN employees and civil organizations, its targeting of navigation in the Red Sea, and the escalation on the fighting fronts… are all practices that indicate that it is not seeking to resolve the conflict through mediation. The envoy said in his briefing yesterday before a session of the UN Security Council: “The Houthis launched a repressive campaign against Yemeni civil society, non-governmental organizations and the United Nations, and arbitrarily arrested 13 United Nations employees and five members of the rest of the civil and international organizations.”
For its part, the Yemeni government confirmed that achieving peace and ending the conflict in Yemen has become a necessity and an urgent demand more than ever, and requires the presence of a real and serious partner who believes in political partnership and equal rights for all Yemenis. The government affirmed in its statement, yesterday, before the open session of the UN Security Council, which was delivered by Yemen’s permanent representative to the United Nations, that any peace process must be based on adherence to national, regional and international references, especially Security Council Resolution No. 2216, and not prejudice the legal and political status of the state.
