The week of June 16th to 22nd features important celebrations and dates that remember the fight against drought and desertification, autistic pride, Japanese immigration and Brazilian cinema. It also includes the 185th anniversary of the birth of Machado de Assis and the 20th anniversary of the death of Leonel Brizola.
This year, the National Commission to Combat Desertification (CNCD) was resumed with a new constitution, with the goal of establishing strategies and promoting coordination between public policy actions. Since it was created in 2008, the consultative and deliberative group’s main objective is to implement the National Policy to Combat Desertification and Mitigate the Effects of Drought, in compliance with the commitment made by the country through the United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification. 110 years ago, on June 17th, the Olympic Flag was presented by Baron de Coubertin for the first time at the Paris Olympic Congress. National Japanese Immigration Day, celebrated on June 18, marks the arrival in Brazil of the Japanese ship, Kasato-Maru, in 1908. National Radio Agency published a report on the arrival of these immigrants: “Almost 800 workers came on the Kasato-Maru Ship, which docked at the Port of Santos, in São Paulo. From there they went to coffee farms and are currently all over the country, working in different economic sectors.” To celebrate the date, the National Radio Agency also told the origin of Japanese-Amazonian recipes. The first cinematographic record documented in Brazil dates back to June 19, 1898. It was on this date that the Italian-Brazilian Afonso Segreto (1875-1919), considered the first national filmmaker, filmed Guanabara Bay aboard the ship Brèsil. This June 21st, the writer from Rio de Janeiro Machado de Assis celebrates his 185th birthday. This year, the author of great literary works increased the international recognition of his talent, with the translation into English of the book The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas –first place in Amazon sales of Latin American and Caribbean literature. The book was published by Penguin Classics with a translation by Flora Thomson-DeVaux. The first place in the sales ranking came after a review by North American influencer Courtney Henning Novak went viral on Tik Tok. A Brazil Agency reflected the event.
Also on the 21st it will be 20 years since the death of Gaucho politician Leonel Brizola. In 2015 the president Dilma Roussef included Leonel Brizola in the Book of Heroes of the Fatherland.
