The UAE welcomed the priorities identified by Egypt as chair of the COP27 Conference on Climate Change, praising the leadership role of Cairo in this aspect, and affirmed its commitment to supporting and building on Egyptian efforts during the UAE’s presidency of the twenty-eighth session of the conference. The UAE will host the United Nations Climate Conference “COP 28” next year, stressing its commitment to global climate action to protect the planet. The UAE stressed, in a statement during a dialogue at the round table to prepare for the Conference of Parties (COP27) delivered by Amira Al-Hafeiti, Deputy Permanent Representative of the State to the United Nations, that the international community should invest in clean energy and climate and support development in Africa to maintain stability and prevent conflicts.
She said: “When talking about improving Africa’s capacity to access energy, it is necessary to invest in various solutions related to this issue, including the production of low-carbon oil and gas, while focusing at the same time on renewable energy sources, as we all realize that they have become the least expensive, especially In areas that depend on large quantities of fuel. “Renewable energy sources can generate power for factories and large-scale networks, and in light of the continued global demand for oil and gas, it must be ensured that it is low carbon,” Al-Hafiti added.
And she continued: “The private sector must invest in renewable energy more than the public sector, due to its low cost, but this requires financial institutions and governments to provide targeted support, such as providing guarantees and financing necessary to prepare projects related to this field, as this will contribute to In removing the expected risks, which allows a greater flow of private financing in renewable energy.”
She said: “As we look at the goal of climate finance after 2025, we must remember that fragile states, many of which are located in Africa, currently receive 80 times less climate finance than other developing countries, as this gap must be closed, especially since climate finance It is a direct investment in maintaining stability and preventing conflict.” Concluding the statement, Al Hefaiti affirmed that the UAE is fully prepared to work with the international community and our partners in Africa on these important issues related to sustainable development and clean energy.
