In 2016, Mel Gibson had already talked about “Resurrection”, the name that the sequel would carry. In a talk with Stephen Colbert, the actor mentioned that it was a project in mind and that, unlike other films, he wanted to tell what happened before and during the return of Jesus after being crucified.
He even talked about the possibility of adding a journey of Jesus through hell. “I’m not sure, but it’s worth thinking about, isn’t it?” the interpreter commented.

Without further news about the tape, the last thing that was known was that in November 2021 a Gibson representative told the Express.co.uk portal that “there were no new updates” and that the film was “still in the development stage.”
