What a mess at Phillip Island: Moreira runs after losing consciousness
In a MotoGP World Championship that often tells us stories of riders who go beyond any threshold of pain to the point of being appreciated for an attitude that is sometimes almost heroic, there was a return that certainly should have been avoided. The protagonist is Diogo Moreirawho crashed in the warm-up at Turn 2 yesterday morning at Phillip Island and then took part in the race an hour and a half later.
Nothing special, you might say. And instead, after the fall in the morning (in which he hit his head violently) the Brazilian lost consciousness, evidently without the championship doctors noticing, also because the rider got up and left the escape route with his legs. They didn’t even notice it in the MT Helmets-Msi team, which sent him on track for the race: “We want to make a clarification on what happened with Diogo. When Moreira crashed in the warm up, no one knew that he had lost consciousness and he got up on his own. In the race, when he got off the bike, he said he felt dizzy and it was later confirmed that he lost consciousness. If this had been known at the time, no one would have allowed him to start the race. The most important thing is the safety of the runners and for all components of the World Championship, the well-being of our athletes always comes first“.

Moreira retired after five laps in the downpour at Phillip Island. After the race he returned to the pits suffering from dizziness and went to the Medical Center for a check-up, being declared unfit.
The Brazilian driver himself admitted after the race that he didn’t remember the morning’s accident at all: “We have to keep the good from this weekend, we were strong in all the sessions. During the warm up I fell and hit my head, which made me lose consciousness, and I have to thank everyone for their help and concern. Now it’s time to think about Thailand and give 100% for a good result“.
