The 21-year-old was found in the back of the ship, and he is in good health, and confirmed that he is from Belarus.
“Tell me I’m alive,” the unnamed survivor told rescuers, Proto Thema newspaper reported.
After discovering his presence, rescue teams were able to board the ferry to rescue him and evacuate him via a ladder, according to the Greek authorities.
A coast guard official told AFP that the survivor was one of 12 truck drivers who went missing off the island of Corfu.
Rescue teams hope that the survivor will be able to provide information on other missing persons who may be held on board the ferry, which was still billowing in thick smoke on Sunday morning.
The ship belonging to the Italian company “Grimaldi” was heading to Brindisi in Italy, and it caught fire at dawn on Friday, two hours after it sailed from the Greek port of Igoumenitsa, with 290 registered people on board, including 51 crew members.
A total of 278 people on the passenger lists were rescued, in addition to two unregistered Afghan migrants, raising fears that the number of missing was higher than reported, for migrants to board ferries between Greece and Italy.
The locomotives were able to bring the ship close to the coast, about 10 kilometers north of Corfu, state television ERT reported.
