In March 2023, Nintendo will pull the plug on the Wii U eShop – the store for digital shopping on consoles and the web – Here’s what to play before it happens.
The Wii U eShop will close in March 2023. This means that you have just over a year to prepare: beyond the worries of what will be of digital only (and not) video games involved, it is a good amount of time to remove some skeletons from the closet . Wii U may not have sold as well as Switch, but it’s still home to dozens of great titles, which are worth recovering before Nintendo makes them disappear.
10 pearls to play on Wii U –
Many of these have been ported to other platforms as well, but Wii U still has some exclusive games and unique cross-platform productions conversions that you simply can’t play anywhere else. In this list, you’ll find the Wii U games you need to catch up on, and while you can play some of these on other systems, there’s nothing better than enjoying them. on the gamepad by Wii U.
Xenoblade Chronicles X –
If there’s a Wii U exclusive that should be considered essential, it’s Xenoblade Chronicles X. This is the only Xenoblade chapter you can’t play on Nintendo Switch, with a “third” just announced, and it’s by far the most interesting.
In the game, you will explore the planet Mira with the last exponents of mankind, after having crashed on the last of the space colonies. This alien planet is fascinating to explore and only gets more interesting once you unlock the unique mechs (and the ability to use them to fly freely around the planet).
Kirby and the Rainbow Brush –
Kirby and the Rainbow Brush is the kind of title you can play only with a styluswhich means Wii U is the only home console you can try it out on.
With graphics that are reminiscent hand-molded clay, Kirby’s journey into this world is fantastic and the crossing is handled entirely by creating a path made of rainbows for Kirby on the touch screen. The game is essentially a sequel to Kirby: Dark Design and works great on Wii U.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD –
Obvious choice, right? The pair of Zelda remasters for Wii U are by far the best way to enjoy these two titles. Twilight Princess is criticized by many again in 2022, with many complaining about the absence of a memorable story or art direction.
Legitimate criticisms, but they ignore incredible gameplay: Refined combat, excellent dungeons and a detailed world make it possibly the best traditional chapter of Zelda.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD –
The Wind Waker has the opposite problem to Twilight Princess. AND splendid and infinitely memorable for dozens of reasons, but what about dungeons? Terrible.
That Triforce mission in the end? Boring. Thankfully, The Wind Waker HD corrects many of these problems, with a faster speed of navigating the seas and a faster Triforce mission. The main dungeons are still what they always have been, but it’s no doubt easier to deal with these additions.
Nintendo Land –
If you have a Wii U, a pair of Wii Remotes and four friends, then Nintendo Land is the game you need. Make sure everyone has a Mii created, start the tour and have a good time. There are a total of 12 mini-games to play, each of which is far more robust than what you’d expect from the various Mario Parties.
At least three difficulties for each game, dozens of levels in some of them, and a lot of depth in the controls of each thanks to full use of the Wii U gamepad. The gamepad was the best way to play asynchronous local multiplayer, and Nintendo Land was, unfortunately, one of the few games that showed why.
Pushmo World –
Known as Pullblox World in Europe, Pushmo World is a puzzle game that allows you to climb a variety of interesting structures, all in the hope of reaching the top. Each section of the structure can be pulled out as a drawer with four different levels of depth.
Taking them all out will make most of the structures impossible to climb but you will unlock shortcuts and slowly discover a clean path. This puzzle game is a lot of fun and even has downloadable stages. Take it while you can …
Splatoon –
Splatoon 2 is already available on Nintendo Switch as well Splatoon 3 is coming later this year, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore Splatoon.
Splatoon multiplayer is out of date, and while you can still find matches, it’s not worth going back to. No, it is the single-player campaign the one you have to play, which has a variety of levels all built with the same ingenuity as the two Super Mario Galaxy. Necessary.
Paper Mario: Color Splash –
Paper Mario: Color Splash arrived very late in the Wii U library, but that doesn’t change that an excellent game.
You could look for some flaw in particular with the lantern and complain about the combat system, for example, but this is it a magnificent RPG from whatever angle you look at it. Paper Mario: The Origami King is heavily inspired by the Wii U release, and is still worth checking out.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate –
Monster Hunter quickly became one of Capcom’s biggest franchises, but that wasn’t always the case. Monster Hunter became a cornerstone on 3DS but before that, the best version of Monster Hunter 3 could only be played on Wii U.
Sure, there was a version for 3DS but it didn’t have online multiplayer unless connected to Wii U. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate set the layout for the future of the series and it is one of the few HD releases of one of the oldest chapters of the saga.
Rayman Legends, Batman: Arkham City, Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut –
Three in one, but for good reason – they’re all three cross-platform titles that perform best when played on Wii U. Rayman Legends is the best example of this, since it includes so many gamepad features that they have never been translated well on other platforms, and that alone makes the Wii U version the ultimate way to play it. Batman: Arkham City – Armored Edition was released only on Wii U, putting all the DLCs in one package and introducing specific features for the Nintendo console controller.
Finally, there’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut which was, for a long time, the only way to play the rebalanced version of the title. You can now download the DLC to play this version on Steam, but it still doesn’t include – you might have guessed – the great gamepad features. These three games proved that the gamepad could have been an advantage over cross-platform titles, but sadly Wii U never had a chance to prove it other than the products on this list.
