June 21, 2022, 11.14 am: the sun stops for a moment on the highest point above the celestial equator, and then slowly lowers again. Here is the solstice, with the word indicating precisely the apparent pause of the sun in the ‘highest point of the sky’ with the longest day of the year in our hemisphere (about 15 hours and 14 minutes). From tomorrow the days will begin to shorten, while the African heat will begin to lengthen, to expand like a ‘blaze’ over the whole of Italy. The anticyclone Charon from Algeria will invade our country for at least 10 days with African temperatures up to 43/44 ° C in the shadeand unfortunately we do not exclude even higher values.
Charon’s blaze will therefore be a mix of steam and warm light, a hot infernal flash. Conditions will be scorching with an exaggerated heat wave for the period.
Lorenzo Tedici, site meteorologist www.iLMeteo.it, therefore confirms the arrival of the third heat wave. Peaks of 43 ° C are expected in Puglia, 37/38 ° C in Bologna, Ferrara and Terni, 41/42 ° C in Caltanissetta and Oristano, 38 ° C in Florence, 40 ° C in Cosenza, values that could lead new records for the month of June.
Some records will probably be unbeatable, such as the 47 ° C of 25 June 2007 in Foggia, when disastrous fires pushed exceptional flashes towards the Apulian plains. Even the 40 ° C of the ‘Italia 90’ Soccer World Cup in Florence will probably be unattainable, while the 39 ° C of Ferrara on June 27, 2019 could be retouched like many other values throughout our peninsula.
What is certain is that it will be an exceptional period: it starts with the Solstice, the sun stops to watch Charon cross the Mediterranean with his hot flash towards Italy for at least 10 days.
And the long duration of Charon will be record-breaking. If the projections are confirmed we could remain under the red-hot hood of the Dante character until the first days of July: without respite from North to South and in an early period for the Italian summer, exactly at the beginning, we dare not imagine what could happen to July and August.
