The companies Biontech and Pfizer announced the results of a large-scale study on booster vaccinations against the coronavirus on Thursday.
Mainz – According to the study with more than ten thousand participants aged 16 and over, the vaccinated people had the same vaccination protection after the third vaccination as after the second vaccination dose, as the companies announced. The effectiveness was 95.6 percent compared to study participants who did not receive a booster vaccination.
The German Biontech founder Ugur Sahin evaluated the study results as evidence that the so-called booster vaccinations can help to protect large parts of the population from the corona virus. “Based on these results, we believe that in addition to widespread global access to vaccines, booster vaccinations could play an important role in containing the pandemic and returning to normal life.”
All study participants had previously received two vaccinations from Biontech. Half of the group received a third dose, the other half a placebo. In the study participants who were vaccinated for the third time, there were five Covid-19 cases during the study period, while 109 cases, more than 10 times as many, occurred in the group with the placebo. The effectiveness was independent of age, gender, ethnicity or co-morbidities.
