After the fire on an Italian car ferry off Greece, rescue teams have now recovered a second body. More people are missing.
Athens – Rescue workers have discovered a second body in the mostly burned-out Italian car ferry “Euroferry Olympia”.
The body was due to be taken for autopsy and identification on Thursday, Greek State Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) reported. She had been discovered the night before in one of the ship’s car decks. Special commands of the fire brigade are now looking for other new missing people, it said. It is believed to be one of the truck drivers who slept in their cars and were trapped by the flames. The body of a Greek truck driver was discovered in his car on Sunday.
The ship was towed into the container port of the western Greek coastal town of Astakos on Wednesday. This container port was chosen because the surrounding area is largely uninhabited. Toxic gases came out of the ship on Thursday morning due to small smoldering fires.
The fire on the “Euroferry Olympia” broke out on Friday night for previously unknown reasons. 280 people could be rescued within hours. However, there is little hope for passengers on the lower parking decks. dpa
